Pat Cummins Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has taken 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. With luck starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
