Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any major awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a demand to include of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would tabletop games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types successfully include many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
