The anticipation surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The question has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
A Different Direction
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian clarified that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.
That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction suggests that the team could be crafting a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it kicked off the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, branching plots, and complex character building—qualities that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs you can achieve with a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also notoriously flexible, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is precisely these elements that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can get ready for more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
