Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Here's a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate horror films: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere via Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but beneath Together lies a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative begins when the couple move from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, of course, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and presents them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his floundering music career inexorably rises.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is intensified by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

Shanks’ smartest move in Together refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

The couple grapple with the sort of issues that come with most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent feeling of questioning about their future together.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of codependency and fully committing to a partner, the allegory avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have understood the narrative as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform now.
