Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the ability to question specific calls from the official, following the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a player can request.

A Recent Example

A recent case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
